S05 Episode 13

How to Celebrate the Holidays When You're Family Isn't Gluten Free with Tarryn of My Celiac Life

Although Tarryn is Celiac, her husband Jake can eat a “regular” diet. Their home kitchen isn’t completely gluten-free, but Jake is very conscious about how he prepares food with gluten in their kitchen so as not to cross-contaminate Tarryn. “We don’t have bread and food that would make a lot of crumbs, to make a mess that would make it difficult to track gluten. I have my own little cupboard on the side where I can have some of my favorite snacks, which may have gluten, but I’m careful with them. I’m not necessarily eating them on the counter or without being extra careful.”

Tarryn says Jake is very understanding of her Celiac disease. He has separate peanut butter, and they only have gluten-free bread in the house to be on the ultra-safe side. Since Jake is cereal obsessed, he has his own cereal bowl for his breakfast or anytime he eats gluten. “As far as utensils, I’d say our home is Celiac safe.”

Listen in to find out how Tarryn found out she had Celiac disease, Jake’s reaction to Tarryn finding out about her auto-immune disease, and mistakes they made about choosing food when Tarryn was first diagnosed. Learn how they vet restaurants, the role of the CCA - Canadian Celiac Association, and how Jake and Tarryn navigate the gluten-free holidays with two families that aren’t gluten-free.
